Lucas Torreira would ‘love’ to return to Italy amid fresh speculation surrounding the Arsenal midfielder’s future.

The Uruguay international enjoyed an impressive first season in English football following his arrival from Sampdoria after the 2018 World Cup, establishing his place in front of the back four, adding a combative and tenacious edge to Unai Emery’s side.

Torreira, however, fell out of favour with the Spaniard towards the end of his turbulent reign and was redeployed in an unfamilar attacking role during the early part of the current season.

The 24-year-old has reemerged as a key component of Mikel Arteta’s new-look side but he still harbours an ambition to return to Italy, according to his agent Pablo Bentancur.

‘I will have to talk to Arsenal,’ he told TuttoMercatoWeb. ‘The player would love to return to Italy, but it must be acknowledged that Arsenal treated him very well and he’s behaved great.’

Torreira was on the brink of signing for Napoli before Arsenal submitted a more lucrative financial offer, but the player has regularly spoken about the difficulties of settling in England.

‘I don’t know if there are many things that I enjoy,’ he said last summer. I think it was better in Italy. England is a totally different world, a very large country.

‘The language [barrier] has stopped me, to be able to relate with my teammates and with the people. It is very difficult when you can’t have dialogue.

‘And so is the climate. You go out in the morning and it is cloudy, you arrive late to your home and it is cloudy.’

Torreira is due back in training next week ahead of a potential Premier League resumption on June 12 at the earliest. He suffered an injury during March’s FA Cup fifth round tie against Portsmouth but is closing in on making a return.

‘Lucas had been in a bit of a bad mood over some technical differences, then he recovered,’ added Bentacur. ‘And then this injury happened, fortunately less serious than expected.’
